New Poll Shows Clay Higgins With A Commanding Lead As The Race Gets Nastier

The Clay Higgins campaign has to be pleased with a new poll that came out yesterday from Magellan Strategies. Here are the results of the poll, which was commissioned by Higgins’s super PAC:

Clay Higgins: 50%
Scott Angelle: 32%
Undecided: 19%

The sample size was 400 and the margin of error is 4.9%. Of course with all internal campaign polls, take them with a grain of salt.

The Higgins super PAC thinks that the electorate is going to look like the one who voted in the governor’s race runoff last year. The racial, partisan, and gender demographics nearly align with the turnout for that race.

Meanwhile, the Scott Angelle campaign is celebrating their NRA endorsement. The group gave Angelle their endorsement over Clay Higgins. That will help Angelle blunt Higgins’s attacks from the right.

Angelle is also getting a hand from the left. “Manny Schewitz”, who was last seen attacking Louisiana flood victimsblasted Higgins in a rather obnoxious blog post.

Most of the country has moved on from the 2016 election. However, here in Louisiana, there are a number of contests still undecided. These include a Senate runoff between Republican John Kennedy and Democrat Foster Campbell, and a congressional runoff in the 3rd District between two Republicans, Scott Angelle and Clay Higgins.

The outcome of the Senate race could narrow the Republican control of the United States Senate, but the more interesting contest is between Scott Angelle and Clay Higgins. Angelle is a member of the Public Service Commission and served as the interim lieutenant governor under Bobby Jindal for six months in 2010. He is generally respected in the region, and is considered to be a populist Cajun politician in the Louisiana tradition that goes back to Huey Long.

Then you have Clay Higgins, a disgraced former sheriff’s captain who was forced to resign his post in St. Landry Parish for a number of reasons, including using his position to make money on the side while on the clock.

Higgins was possibly destined for a reality TV show before the department caught on to his shenanigans, and he used his Crimestoppers videos to create a viral media buzz that endeared him to low-information supporters who love the idea of extra-judicial justice and “street cop” justice.

Clay Higgins “tough cop” persona was shattered when he lost to a firefighter in an unanimous decision during a “Battle of the Badges” boxing match back in August.

The entire blog post is full of smug, obnoxious attacks against Higgins.

The U.S. House 3rd District race is going to get nastier until the runoff day. If what’s left of the Jindal machine loses this race, they’re more or less done for in Louisiana politics. Right now, there is no independent polling of the race so we don’t know who is actually winning.
